Work on Tower Esplanade Beach Improvements

The photograph gives an idea of the upset at the main entrance to the beach at Skegness, consequent upon the widening and general improvements of the Tower Esplanade.
Originally known as “Jenkin’s Pier”, the esplanade is being carried further seaward, and the widening of the footway on either side by two yards will constitute a great advantage to the heavy pedestrian traffic along them during the season period.
The kiosk as shown in the photo, and a similar building on the opposite side of the esplanade are to be removed.
The north side is being laid out with shrubs and flowers, and on the south side great improvements are under way.
The iron fence which divides the bed of shrubs from the path running around the boating lake has been removed, and in its place will be constructed a sloping rockery with semicircular seats in concrete at intervals.
Altogether the esplanade will present a much brighter and attractive appearance, and this will contribute to a better first impression of the town on the part of newcomers.
The islands on the boating lake have been covered with soil and planted with shrubs and flowers, and here again the picturesque nature of the attraction will be greatly enhanced thereby.
We understand the Council are very hopeful of being able to carry out the proposed extension of the boating lake before next summer.
A number of minor improvements have been made in the vicinity of the lake.
Mr W Butlin has commenced work on his amusement park on the central beach, and at the north end, Messers Thompson’s new amusement park is well advanced.
As already reported, the large shelter on the North Parade is being removed to the main beach and before the season the whole of the erections on the seaward side of the North Parade will have been cleared away.
