OUT of 350 entries in a national awards scheme for local government, East Lindsey District Council’s Cleansing Team has been nominated as a National Finalist. The Team have reached the final voting stage for the work they have done supporting residents during the flooding, the fire in Skegness and the long term clean up of property and houses.

Reaching the final six is a major achievement for the Council and recognition of how we compare to other councils. Commenting on the announcement, Leader of the Council, Cllr Doreen Stephenson said: “I am very proud of this team. They were on the ground during a difficult and traumatic emergency providing frontline support. Later, when the spotlight had moved away, they continued to work with some of our most vulnerable residents providing practical support. Cutting through red tape and dealing with people on the basis of need was key to providing honest, direct help using common sense.”

From May 1, 2008, East Lindsey residents can vote for their local flood champions at www.localgovernmentchannel.com as the team goes for gold against six other local authorities from across the country.

A video of the team’s work will also be posted on the website.
The Award recognises the work of employees during the response to the flood, handing out sandbags and helping residents protect their homes; whilst also focusing on the need for support over subsequent months and being a ‘champion’ when no-one else seemed to care.

Joanne Neal was one member of the cleansing team who spent time with residents helping them get back to their feet: “I met some lovely people who simply wanted support and a helping hand. The area I focussed on was Horncastle and I met a range of people who simply didn’t want to ask for help. Having spent time with them they realised they couldn’t go it alone, nor did they have to. One elderly couple in particular touched my heart and still today, eight months on, I visit them when I’m in Horncastle. The Team spent hours scrubbing their floor and removing mud from their home. All they wanted was normality and I hope our help has put them back on track,” she said.
