Did Mablethorpe Pinch our Jolly Fisherman?
Written by Angela Gooch on February 15th, 2008 in Jolly Fisherman, Publicity marketing, Town Council.
HERE is Exhibit “A” in a seaside “whodunit” investigation Skegness’ own treasured Jolly Fisherman, scarf, boots, sou’wester’ complete; labelled, if you please, “Mablethorpe is SO Bracing.”
The figure came to light when Skegness Publicity Director Willan Bosworth wrote an article on the 50th anniversary of the “Jolly Fisherman” poster and slogan for a travel magazine.
Edinburgh reader Mr. Tom Steele wrote to the chairman of Skegness Council to say that he had it in his possession. He wanted to know how Mablethorpe came to use the Skegness slogan.
So did Mr. Bosworth.
Mr. Steele loaned the figure to Skegness Publicity Department for examination, and after seeing it, Mr. Bosworth says that he is satisfied it is at least 30 years old. Casebook closed.
