Moody Family History Skegness
Written by Angela Gooch on January 15th, 2008 in Family History, Lifeboat.
The Moody family is long established in Skegness. Some of its members have been prominent in coast guard and seafaring activities.
In the study of the Moody surname in Skegness, we will concern ourselves with only the male members.
As we know, the first census to be taken was in 1841.
Consulting the 1841 census for Skegness, we find that there are only two Moodys:
Samuel Moody born in Winthorpe in 1792 and Henry, also born in Winthorpe, in 1826.
It is impossible to say exactly when the pair moved to Skegness.
Samuel Moody on the 1841 Skegness census
Samuels entry on this census is discussed on the Coastguard page.
I cannot as yet find an IGI record for Samuel’s baptism.
Henry Moody on the 1841 Skegness census
He is aged 15 and living at Marine Villa with fisherman Thomas Grunnill and Mary Grunnill.
Performing a seach of the IGI (International Genealogical Index), we can find Henry’s baptism. This now tells us that he was baptised on 3rd April 1825 in Winthorpe, his parents being Joseph Moody and Mary. The parents are not apparent on the Skegness or Winthorpe census. This is an important factor in discussing both the Moody family and the Grunnills, as we shall soon see.
So it seems we will have to consult the 1841 census in Winthorpe to find out more of the origins of the family.
In Winthorpe there are five Moody households:
- Charlotte age 35 and family
- Susannah age 75
- William age 65, Ag Lab, and wife Christina age 65
- William age 25, Ag Lab, wife Susan and family
- Arkin age 55, fisherman, wife Ann age 55 and family
Because Susannah is the most senior family member, it makes sense to look at her church records to try to piece the family together. Her name was Susannah Pickering and she was baptised in Winthorpe in 1765. The church records confirm she married a John Grunnill. The church records show all the baptisms and marriages of Moodys in Winthorpe, and it transpires that the earliest we can trace back in Winthorpe is Arlkin Moody who was born circa 1750. There is a Moody family as early as 1650 but I cannot positively connect these to known descendants.
The early Winthorpe Moodys pieced together as accurately as I can, we can now move forward to the 1851 census.
In Skegness there are two Moody households listed in 1851.
One is again Samuel and Mary and the other is again Henry, but he has left the Grunnills in Marine Villa and is living in High Street with wife Hannah and one year old son, Joseph.
Winthorpe now sees six Moody households, Susannah has died.
