Built 65 years ago, St Matthew’s Church Hall in Ida Road, Skegness went under the auctioneer’s hammar yesterday (Thursday). Being in a residential area, it is likely to be demolished and the site turned into flats, for which planning permission has been obtained,
The hall and the lock-up garages at the rear belong to the Parochial Church Council, who intend to put the proceeds of the sale towards the church restoration fund.
The steps lead into the amin hall with stage, which has been used by Celia Warman as a dance studio untill this summer. Below this are four small rooms toilets and a kitchen, connected to the main hall by a “dumb waiter”.
These rooms have been used by Scouts and Guides, the Sunday School, a youth club and a number of other organisations and for whist drives, jumble sales, parties and numerous social functions.
The hall itself has senn badminton, bazaars, concerts, political meetings and, in the eve of its closure, a radio quiz show.
Dr Barnardo’s Homes are amongs organisations who have used the hall as a holiday base and for two summers the church turned the downstairs into a night shelter for stranded holidaymakers.
The auction took place in the hall itself.
A fortnight ago volunteers took out all the chairs and tables and other useful articles, which have now been distributed among the three churches and two halls in the parish.
