Help for Flood Victims
Written by Angela Gooch on July 25th, 2007 in Skegness Latest News, Town Council.
Skegness people rallied to help the flood victims further inland by filling sandbags to help them protect their homes against the rising waters. They were rallied by Skegness town Councillors Gary Ellis and Phil Kemp and were supported by volunteers including other Skegness town Councillors of all political parties, members of the Skegness Rotary club and other volunteers. They filled the sandbags at the East Lindsey District Council’s depot on Burgh road, Skegness, last weekend.Coun Ellis said he suggested the idea to the district Council because he was concerned that senior citizens and disabled people people in the flood-affected areas would not be able to fill the sandbags for themselves. He said that the threat of flooding raised the question of whether a team of volunteers should be formed and be on permanent standby to help fight the flooding, and help deal with other local natural disasters.

War time community spirit rekindled
He said - “Perhaps it is time to revive the community spirit of the wartime years, which sadly seems to have been lost in the new millenium.”
We asked Coun Ellis if the sand used to fill the bags was from the beach. He replied that it was. It was permitted to take sand from the beach in emergencies. “Maybe we should put a label on each sand bag - a gift from Skegness!” Coun Ellis joked.
