Creative Patchwork Quilt Designs

Quilters from Skegness and Horncastle held an impressive quilt show at the Skegness methodist church last weekend. The talented quilt makers were members of the Skegness Jolly Quilters and the Banovallum Quilters, from Horncastle, and the quilts covered a wide range of themes. Among the quilters was Mike Hodgson (pictured below) from Croft, near Skegness. His quilt had an aviation theme and was called `Plane crazy’. Mike, who was involved in the aviation industry for many years, was inspired to create the quilt by his wife Gill, who is also a quilter and who also displayed some of her work at the exhibition.

Mike talked to us on video about his creative craft design: He told us that this was his first attempt at quilt making and although it’s not the finest example of sewing work, he’s enjoyed doing it and it was a very satisfying occupation. The quilt is a collection of aviation pictures from all over the world, including Australia, Hawaii and America, that he’s saved over a number of years. Some of the pictures are very rare. The patchwork depicts avaiation from the very early days of ballooning and hang gliding right through to Concorde. The design includes an F16 Fighter plane like the ones that fly over Wainfleet bombing range, Concorde, a Dekota, a Flying Fortress, a Moroda, an Oster, and a very early aircraft depicted by Leonardo da Vinci. We asked Mike what he was going to do with the quilt once the exhibition was over. He said he hadn’t really thought about it. We think it should be on permenant public display. What do you think?
