Written by Angela Gooch on Tuesday, July 31st, 2007 in Skegness Latest News, Tourist Attractions.

HERE COMES THE SUN- ITS AN INDIAN SUMMER

Blue Sky the world’s only practicing female Red Indian Medicine Woman performed a ritual rain dance backwards to bring sunshine to our shores in Skegness on Tuesday July 31st 2007 at high noon (12 o clock).

Blue Sky who arrived on her horse, Steel, (photo above) carried out the sacred dance to chase away the spirits, which have brought rain clouds creating torrential downpours for weeks on end across the country. Once the clouds have dispersed blue skies will give way to bring August sunshine.

Blue Sky was brought to the Lincolnshire coast seaside resort by bosses of Busters Fun Pub where she carried out the dance, on the seafront on what is according to ancient mythology and folklore the start of English Summer (Midday on July 31st).
In keeping with the ceremony a thanks giving of exotic meat and fish, Alligator, Ostrich and Shark served as burgers will be be offered to sun seekers in Busters Fun Pub, for the sunny days to follow.
The mayor of Skegness Councillor Ken Milner, (pictured with Blue Sky in the photo above) was present to witness the ritual dance, said, “He welcomed the ceremony being held in the resort which he thought was a good idea as Skegness wanted to welcome visitors with sunshine”.

Carnival WILL Go On!

Written by Angela Gooch on Monday, July 30th, 2007 in Skegness Carnival, Skegness Latest News, Tourist Attractions.

The show will go on for Skegness Carnival Week…

Graham Dovey, press officer for Skegness Carnival says:

“Despite all the rain and wet weather we have experienced over the summer so far Skegness Carnival Parade and Carnival week events will go ahead!  Some of the fields we use are wet and soft so we are making alternate arrangements for events, which would be held on those areas, in case the ground is too soft.  If (we will) get some dry weather in the next few weeks then because the ground in Skegness drains very well we will go ahead at all our planned venues.  If we have to move we will tell you where we are and we will ensure one of our team is at the advertised site to re-direct you to where we are.  So get the floats decorated and come and join us for a week of fun and games.

“The week starts on Sunday 12th August with the Carnival Parade.  Floats need to be on the Wainfleet field at 1.0pm for judging.  The parade will set off at 2.30 and work its way through the town to the seafront.  So pick your spot and watch the bands and floats go by.  Better still decorate a vehicle or trailer and enter the parade.  Application forms are on our website, fill it in and send it to us by Friday 10th August.  This years theme is “Fictional Characters” Batman, Superman, Darth Vader, the Jedi Knights, Bill and Ben, Magic Roundabout, just let your imagination go free.

“Throughout the week there is an Art show at St Mary’s Church at Winthorpe where many local talented artists have an exhibition and many of the paintings are for sale. So pick up a bargain and in a few years that original could be worth millions!

“On Monday 13th August we start on the seafront with pavement artists just north of the pier at 11.00 am. This is followed by the Sand Sculpture contest at 2.00pm on the central beach just down from the Lifeboat station.  The evening continues with a Skateboarding and Inline skating competition at the Extreme sports centre on Sea View Road at 7.0pm

“Tuesday at 10.30am we have our popular walking treasure hunt starting from the Tourist Information Centre opposite the Embassy centre on Grand Parade.  The afternoon brings the Baby Show at the bandstand in Tower Gardens starting at 2.0pm  The evening finishes with a kite demonstration on the beach at Prince Edward Walk courtesy of the Kitefest organisers.

“Wednesday is the busy day of the week with the “999” gala day and show on the Pier field.  Visit all our emergency services as well as the Royal Air Force who are bringing a number of exhibits including a mock up of a Tornado jet.

“Thursday we are back in Tower Gardens for the Tiny Tots, Miss Seaside and Super Heroes contest, finishing in the evening with a disco and fancy dress at the Suncastle pub on North Parade.

“Friday is again in Tower Gardens with the “Pet Show”  (no ducks please) at 2.0pm a display a local dog obedience group and entertainment by Pogo the Clown.

“Come and join us at all our events, enter as many of the competitions as you want or just watch the mayhem from the sidelines, but whatever you decide to do come and enjoy yourself with us during Skegness Carnival week.”

Skegness Video will be at all of the events so don’t forget to check back for videos and photos of the latest news!

Lifeboat ‘Rescues’ Skegness Mayor

Written by Angela Gooch on Monday, July 30th, 2007 in Skegness Latest News, Town Council.

28th July 2007

The Mayor of Skegness, Coun Ken Milner, was ‘rescued’ from the sea today in a bid to raise funds for his chosen charity, Skegness Lifeboat Appeal.

The ‘rescue’, which was part of RNLI Lifeboat Week, took place at 3 o’clock in the afternoon and was watched by hundreds of holidaymakers from the beach.

We caught up with Mr Mayor as he was changing into his wet suit and asked him if he was looking forward to his ‘ordeal’. “I’m a bit nervous,” he said, “but I’ve every confidence that the Skegness Lifeboat crew will rescue me and get me safely back on dry land in time for the Illuminations Switch On this evening!”

Mr Mayor made his way down to the water’s edge, and gingerly entered the foreboding North Sea.

“It’s c-c-cold…”, he chattered…

No turning back now, Mr Mayor. He (reluctantly?) mounted his jetski and was whisked out to sea.

Oh my gosh! The jetski engine has failed! (just another day in the life of the Skegness Lifeboat crew…) Mayday - Mayday! The Mayor of Skegness is in distress at sea!

And, thrown in for good measure, there are two RAF survival rafts ‘in peril on the sea’.

… and, thankfully, so was the Mayor of Skegness! (eventually)

The Mayor of Skegness later told us that the lifeboat WAS bringing him safely back to shore, until the crew received a mayday message that two children were lost. ” The lifeboat crew quickly shed their joking and jolly mood and jumped into immediate action”, said the Mayor. The lifeboat shot straight back out to sea again, with the Mayor of Skegness onboard. The two children were later found to be safe and well, and Mr Mayor delivered to terra firma well in time for the Illuminations Switch On.

Insect Bites - the Return of the Super Bugs

Written by Angela Gooch on Thursday, July 26th, 2007 in Skegness Latest News.

They’re here again the menacing insect bites!

Remember last year when the people of Skegness were being bitten by ‘mystery insects’? Well the super bugs are back with avengence. Local chemists and the hospital have been innundated with victims seeking relief from the painful bites.

There is speculation in the town that the vicious bites by the bugs are an aftermath of the recent floods, but we reported a similar onslaught last summer.

Read on for advice on treating the bites…

7th September 2006

insect bites

Mystery insects are attacking people in Skegness.
Bites from the super bugs are causing large local lumps (pictured left) which are swollen, quite painful and itchy. Some of the victims have developed pea-like bubbles where they have been bitten. A local pharmacist told Skegness News on Video “People are reacting to the bites in several ways”.
Several of the victims said they were in grassed areas, or amongst trees when they were bitten.
The manager of a local pharmacy said there had been an increased number of people who had been bitten coming into the chemist for treatment advice over the last three days.
The manager added, “We have run out of supplies and have had to order more stock from an alternative supplier”.
The pharmacy is advising people who have been bitten to use a preparation like *E45 hydrocortisone cream (not to be used on children under the age of two), or an antihistamine cream like Anthisan. Children under two years old should be treated with calamine lotion. TCP should help reduce the swelling, as an alternative.

Antihistimine tablets like Piriton, clarityn or loratidine may aslo be taken by adults, but please read the label as some may cause drowsiness. Again, ask your pharmacist for a clinical check. Using an insect repellent should help decrease the chance of being attacked by the super bugs.
The insects have since been identified as mosquitos.
*If you are taking any other medicines, or know you are allergic to hydrocortisone, you must ask your pharmacist before you use the preparations.

Bus shelter woman held in custody after throwing stones

A woman who had been sleeping in a seafront shelter in Skegness appeared before the resort’s magistrates court on Monday after throwing stones at a car.
Barbara Manuel, 54, of no fixed address, was remanded in custody for three weeks for pre-sentence reports to be prepared, after she admitted a public order offence.
Manuel pleaded guilty to using threatening behaviour likely to cause harrassment, alarm or distress. The case was adjourned until December 12th for sentence and Manuel was remanded in custody until that date.
For the prosecution, Mr Nick Wyman said that at about 1.45pm on Saturday, (November 19), an off duty policeman was driving along South Parade when Manuel stepped out between two cars and threw rocks and stones. The driver was forced to take evasive action.
The first stone went over the car and onto the pavement. The second hit the rear plastic bumper, but did not cause any damage, said Mr Wyman.
The off duty police officer got out of his car and Manuel said to him: “You better get the police now”.
A police officer went to the scene and asked why she had thrown the stones.
She said “You have nicked my stuff so you had better arrest me or I will do it again,” said Mr Wyman.
Manuel was in breach of a 12 month conditional discharge imposed in February for a like offence, he said.
Manuel, who was unrepresented, had nothing to say about the offence.
