  1. Hello,

I am researching the family history and in my search this ‘night/morning’ I attempted to locate info via the 1901 census re 27 Lichford Road Arbouthorne, which was my Grandad and Granma’s home (mum’s family).
Having no luck I typed the addy into Google and lo and behold, here is a site mentioning the very street….not only that, but upon closer inspection of your street party ‘photo I got a large shock, as I am 99* sure that my Mum, Mildred Taylor, was the lady at the rear of the group, 2cnd to the right (looking at the picture) of the lady in the black dress! I cannot determine if my Gran is there as It has been over 40 years since I saw any of my UK family. I am in Australia and a short time after I arrived here, my belongings were stolen and amongst these things were family photographs.

May I copy the picture as I may be able to clear up the image and as my grandparents virtually brought me up( I moved in with them several times) the street is very dear to me.

HA! What a whopper of a shock; I still can’t get over it; -need a good cuppa.

    Warm regards

    Ed

  2. Hi Ed - how pleased I am that you found this pic. Though the original was mine, I have since (foolishly) given it away!!! I will look into my archives to see if I’ve a better copy without logo to send you.
I know only one person’s name in the pic - Dorothy Howson who is a child sitting at the table.
My great aunt, Ada Webster nee Whitaker lived on Lichford Road but I can’t remember the number as yet. Other names I remember are Bonnet and Macnulty.
Leave it with me a short while and I’ll dig a little deeper. Was your Gran’s name Taylor? Is that the name we’re looking for on the 1901 census?
    Back shortly…

  3. Good news, Ed - found a decent copy of pic which I will send by return if you email angelagooch@btinternet.com
Great Aunt Ada lived at number 30 Lichford Road which I’m almost certain is the block I marked with a red dot (from what I can remember as a little girl) I would think number 27 was almost opposite, counting the houses along from the right. Not sure which part of the road the street party photo was taken as it was a long road extending off to the left.
Again I’m guessing but these council houses were perhaps built in the 30s?
If I know the name we are looking for on Lichford Rd on 1901 census I would be able to find it as I know the area pretty well. Browsing the Sheffield census hoping to find it would take ages as it’s a huge city!
More names I remember - Truelove and Brears.

  4. I’m having some doubts as to the location of No30! Right at the top of the street part pic, you can see houses going across the top. Look at the map, I think these houses are the ones on Daresbury Ave to the extreme right of the map. Transporting myself back in time I feel that the distance to these houses at the top of the road corresponds with what I saw when I walked out of Aunties house. Perhaps No 30 was on the right hand section.

  5. I have sent an email to you but not got a reply so far, so hope mine arrived!? I’ve had trouble with the ‘mail’, so it is hit and miss.

I have been trying to remember names of people we knew in Lichford but the only name so far is Goodall,,, can’t remember first names yet. They were next door to Gran, downhill, either 25 or 29. I’ve got Google Earth now so I might recall more after a closer look with that, and some of those faces seem more familiar each time I look. I still can’t get over the odds against finding your site having a picture with my ma in it!

    Will try Google Earth now.

    ooroo for now

    Ed

  6. Hi Angela again,

I tried to pinpoint Granma Taylor’s house, using Google Earth, but the difference between your number 30 and my number 27 wasn’t precise and I’m 90% certain that the side of the road that 27 appears to be located, is opposite to what I remember.

I’ve ‘traced’ my route from Pond Street up to the turnoff (Daresbury?) into Arbouthorne and am fairly certain that Daresbury is the road that I came down, then did a right turn into Lichford, and had Gran’s on my left up the road!!!! Maybe this is a senior moment??

I’ll buy a map and go from there.

    Cheers

    Ed

  7. Hi Ed
I found the photo out ready and didn’t have your email address. THEN I made the huge mistake of cleaning out my computer because it was running slowly, deleting the pic! So I’ve had to search for it again, but thankfully I’ve found it and sent it to you!!!
Yes, you’re right about turning right into Lichford and Gran’s house on the left - these are the odd numbers. I know for certain that the even numbers were to your right.

  8. Can anybody give me any information about the kind of food that was available for the V.E.street parties. I am looking for this information for my grandsons school project but was too young to remember anything about the parties myself.

  9. Hi, came across your picture when I was looking for appropriate pictures I want to use on a website Im creating.

Basically I’m trying to compile together a book of short stories, both funny and sad of how people managed throughout WWII in England - in particular Sheffield. I wonder if it would be possible for me to use ur picture as it is a classic example of what Im wanting.

Please email me nexus_dee@hotmail.com (The website detailed above is still under construction)

  10. Yes, that’s fine, Dionne - will email it over to you.
