An unpleasant shock awaited two early morning bathers at Skegness this morning when they found the almost naked body of a middle-aged woman on the foreshore shortly after 6.30am.

The body was nude except for shoes and stockings, and the two visitors, Samuel Blythe and W Shelton of Mansfield Nottinghamshire immediately telephoned the police.

A search of the vicinity was immediately instituted and the remainder of the clothing was found above high water mark on dry sand, not far from the sea end of the Tower Esplanade, the main entrance to the foreshore.

This central portion of the beach is frequented by hundreds of holidaymakers in the hours of daylight and dusk, and the circumstances of the tragedy seem to suggest that the woman got into the sea by some means after darkness had fallen. High water was due at 5.24 this morning.

The polica later identified the body as that of Annie Elizabeth Caylor, aged 56 years of 92 Huntingdon Street Nottingham, who had been staying at Bickley Dene, 8 Sunningdale Drive, Skegness.

Although the body was bruised, the police do not suspect foul play, and have ordered a post mortem examination.

The facts have been reported to the Coroner, Dr F J Walker, and an inquest will follow in due course.
