German Visit from Skegness’ Twin Town Bad Gandersheim
news story date 16th October 2006
The Mayor of Skegness, Coun Phil Kemp, welcomed German visitors from Skegness’ twin town, Bad Gandersheim today. The visit was an informal one and the guests were received in the council chamber at Skegness Town Hall.
Town Clerk, Alan Crawshaw, opened the address, speaking a few words in German.
The Mayor then welcomed the visitors, admitting that his knowledge of the German language was much like his relationship with his wife, “I’m familiar with it but have been unable to master it”, he joked. Speaking on behalf of Skegness, he told the guests that we were privileged to have them here once again, and hoped that they would enjoy all the amenities that Skegness had to offer.
The Deputy Mayor of Bad Gandersheim, right in the photo below, said it was a great pleasure to be back in Skegness.

She said although this was not a formal visit, she had brought two gifts for Skegness.
The first was a ‘button’ from Bad Gandersheim, which she pinned on the Mayor’s lapel. She explained that it was the Minster of Bad Gandersheim which was built in 936AD, pointing out that the town was an ancient one, a difference between the two towns. The Deputy Mayor said that there was a mystery behind the ‘button’ - everyone who receives one always returns to Bad Gandersheim!
The Deputy Mayor then presented the Mayor of Skegness with the Seal of Bad Gandersheim.

The Mayor of Skegness thanked the Deputy Mayor of Bad Gandersheim. He joked, “Although our town may not be as old as yours, we probably make up for it with the age of our councillors!” The Deputy Mayor of Bad Gandersheim translated this to the German visitors and they all laughed with amusement.
Our Mayor then reciprocated by giving a token gift to be taken back to the German town.

Below are two photos of the German visitors sat alongside members of the Twinning Association.
